Why Homemade Treats?

As a baker, I love knowing exactly what goes into my treat. And that goes for my Boston Terriers, too! These cookies aren’t just tasty, they’re packed with benefits:

  • The Power of Flax: You’ll notice I’m using a “flax egg” here. Flaxseed is a powerhouse for pups, offering improved coat health, better digestion, and essential Omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Fresh Apple: Apples are a fantastic low-calorie source of Vitamins A and C, which support pup’s immune system and skin health. Plus, the high fibre content helps with digestion, while the natural crunch can even help freshen their breath.
  • Wholemeal Goodness: Using wholemeal flour provides more fibre than standard white flour, keeping those tummies happy.

What you will need:

  • 1 Granny Smith apple, grated (moisture removed)
  • 280g wholemeal plain flour, plus extra for dusting
  • 3 tablespoons ground flax seeds
  • 190ml warm water
  • 150g Natural Peanut Butter

Em’s Pro Tip: When picking your peanut butter, always check the label. Ensure the ingredients list contains peanuts only. Many brands add xylitol (a sweetener) or extra salts and oils that can be harmful to dogs. Pure is always best!

Why A Flax Egg?

Ground flaxseed is a true powerhouse for canine wellness, often celebrated as a “superfood” in the pet world. It is exceptionally rich in Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA), an Omega-3 fatty acid that works wonders for maintaining a soft, shiny coat and supporting healthy skin from the inside out. Beyond the aesthetic perks, flax provides a gentle source of dietary fibre that aids in smooth digestion and promotes a healthy gut. For aging pups or those with active lifestyles, its natural anti-inflammatory properties can even help support joint mobility, making it a functional and nutritious addition to their favourite homemade treats.

How to make it:

1. Prep the Oven and Apple

Preheat your oven to 180°C and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

How to prep the apple: To remove moisture from the grated apple, pop the shavings onto a layer of paper towel, roll it up, and squeeze firmly over the sink to get rid of the excess liquid. This ensures your cookies stay crunchy rather than soggy!

2. Make the Flax Egg

In a small bowl, mix together the ground flax seed and warm water. Stir well and set aside for about 5 minutes. You’ll notice the mixture becomes thick and “gooey”. This is what binds our cookies together.

3. Mix the Base

Using a wooden spoon, mix together the flour, your prepared flax egg, and the peanut butter in a large bowl.

4. Combine and Knead

Add in the grated apple and mix by hand. Knead the mixture until it forms a solid ball. The dough will be quite dry, so don’t be afraid to add a splash of extra water if it isn’t coming together.

5. Roll and Cut

On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to about 6mm thick. Use a cookie cutter to create your shapes. I personally love using a 4cm round cutter, which is the perfect size for a quick reward for my two boston terriers.

6. Bake to Perfection

Place the shapes on your prepared baking tray and bake for 20 minutes. If you are using larger cutters, you may need to add a few extra minutes. You’re looking for the treats to be dry to the touch and just starting to turn golden.

7. Cool and Store

Allow the treats to cool on the baking tray for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Store them in an airtight container to keep them fresh and crunchy!
