Black Velvet Cupcakes are perfect for Halloween. They look SPOOKY but are super DELICIOUS. 

The chocolate Black Velvet Cupcake is soft and velvety just like the red velvet cupcake we know and love. Topped with a spooky black chocolate buttercream, these cupcakes are a great treat for Halloween or anytime of the year!

What You Will Need

Black Velvet Cupcakes

  • 110g butter, softened
  • 1 ¼ cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ cup cocoa
  • ¼ tsp. black gel food colouring
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 ¼ cups plain flour
  • ½ tsp. baking powder
  • ½ tsp. bicarbonate of soda
  • 3 tbs. white vinegar

Black Chocolate Icing

  • 2 cups icing sugar
  • 100g butter, softened
  • ¼ cup cocoa
  • 2 tbs. milk
  • black gel food colouring

How To Make it

Cupcakes

Step One: Preheat Oven to 160°C and line cupcake tins with black cupcake cases.

Step Two: In a bench mixer, beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

Step Three: Beat in eggs and vanilla extract until smooth.

Step Four: Add cocoa powder and mix well. 

Step Five: In separate bowl, mix together flour, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda.

Step Six: In another separate bowl, mix together milk and black food colouring.

Step Seven: Turn bench mixer on low, mix in flour and milk alternating, making sure to start and end with flour. Mix until just combined.

Step Eight: With mixer on low, fold in vinegar.

Step Nine: Spoon batter into cupcake cases and bake for 15 mins.

Step Ten: Allow cupcakes to cool in tin for 10 minutes, then completely cool on wire rack.

Icing

Step One: Using a bench mixer, beat butter until light and creamy.

Step Two: Add cocoa powder and icing sugar slowly, beating well between each addition.

Step Three: In a separate bowl mix together milk and black food colouring.

Step Four: Slowly add in milk while bench mixer is on low until combined.

Step Five: Beat icing well with mixer on medium.

Step Six: Ice Black Velvet Cupcakes.
