If you’ve been following along with my baking adventures, you know that my kitchen has two very special supervisors. While I’m busy whisking up treats for the humans, my heart is usually busy keeping up with these two! Today, I wanted to introduce you to the real stars of the show: Lola and Teddy.

Our journey with Lola started when she was just a tiny 10 week old pup. She was so small she could literally fit in the palm of my hand! But don’t let that fool you! From day one, she “ruled the house” with a personality ten times her size. She brought a kind of love into our lives that we had never experienced before.

These days, Lola is a professional sunbather. You can usually find her napping in a warm sunbeam or enjoying a breezy day at the beach. We’ve had a few hurdles recently. Lola used to live for her duck sticks, but some sudden allergy issues mean we’ve had to hit “pause” on her favourites. We’re currently working through her new diet, and she’s being such a brave girl about it!

Then there’s our “Ted.” Teddy joined our family when he was 10 years old, proving that senior dogs really are the best kept secret. He is a gentle little man who takes his morning walks very seriously.

In fact, he’s the self-proclaimed Mayor of the dog park! Everyone knows him, and everyone loves him. But behind that wagging tail is a truly brave spirit. Teddy is our little cancer survivor. Watching his strength and resilience has been an inspiring journey. He’s a reminder that no matter what life throws at you, you can still show up to the “office” (the dog park) with a polite smile and a happy heart.

Teddy is a big fan of food and is always down to try a new (dog friendly!) treat. He can be a bit impatient when he knows a snack is coming, but he’s always very polite about it. A true gentleman through and through!

The funniest part of their dynamic? Lola firmly believes that Teddy is her baby. Even though he’s the senior, she’s the one bossing him around and giving him endless “baths” with her kisses. Teddy just takes it all in stride with his gentle spirit.

They truly are the best of friends, and they remind me every day that the “sweet life” is so much better when you have a loyal companion (or two!) by your side.

At the moment, we are officially in our ‘Senior Era’. With Teddy turning 12 and Lola turning 11 this year, our house has slowed down in some ways, but it’s more full of love than ever.

People often ask what keeps me motivated, and honestly? These two are the reason I wake up every morning. And I mean that quite literally! Like clockwork, Teddy decides his morning walk simply cannot wait, and his favourite alarm clock method is jumping right onto my head to make sure I’m awake. It’s hard to stay sleepy when the “Mayor” is demanding his daily rounds!

Life with senior dogs is a little different. There are more vet visits, more careful ingredient checking for Lola’s allergies, and a lot more grey on their sweet little faces. But there’s also a deep, quiet comfort in knowing exactly what they’re thinking. Being with them through every high and low, and making their golden years as sweet as possible is the best project I’ve ever taken on.

Do you have a ‘bossy’ younger pup or a ‘gentle’ senior at home? I’d love to hear your pet stories in the comments!
